Ralph Ostling Memorial Scholarship
Student applying for this scholarship must be a graduating student of Roscommon High School with a minimum GPA of 2.3 (C+).
Ralph Ostling was know for his greetings “Glad to see you,” or “Hey, how are you doing.” His broad smile and healthy handshake made instant impressions and let you know he was a person who cared and who would listen. That was Ralph Ostling, our state representative for 20 years, who championed many causes affecting his constituents and became a voice in Lansing before he left office in 1993.
Born in Roscommon on July 3, 1927, he was the son of John and Vilma Ostling, who came to the United States from Sweden. He was a graduate of Gerrish Higgins High School and graduated in 1952 from Central Michigan University. He also received a masters degree from the University of Michigan.
He married Thela Dean on Dec. 21, 1947 in East Tawas.
Mr. Ostling served in the United States Navy from May, 1945, to July, 1946. He was a teacher and coach at Gerrish-Higgins High School for 20 years. He was the Gerrish Township Clerk from 1957 to 1972 and then served in the Michigan legislature from 1973 to 1993.
He was a life member of the Charles M. Engel VFW Post 4159 and the longest standing member of Messiah Lutheran Church at the time of his death.
Mr. Ostling served his community well during his 82 years; his diligence helped make him an effective leader and representative. His community, including all of Roscommon County, benefited from his service and remains indebted to him.
